Signs by KGBE Rotgut

Thursday, June 2nd, 2005 by Molly

For a year I didn’t even notice that this was on the block where I live!

All over NY there are still remenents of old signs, created hand painted letters, that give me nostalgia for a time I never lived in when making signs was an art. The duo KGBE Rotgut have captured the tradition of hand painted signs in their street installations. The signs are usually attached to fences with masterlocks, constructed out of scrapmetal, wood or other bits of junk and are handpainted. You may pass by them a million times before noticing them. Their weathered appearance gives the impression that they could have existed for years in the same spot.

You can check out pages from their out of print book, Aesthetic Legislation and Zoning Variances from Cantab Publishing.
