Sunflowers grow in Brooklyn

On Sunday VR participated in a parade through Williamsburg to protest the city’s plan to line the waterfront with luxury hi-rise apartment buildings. The event started in Grand St Park and marched across Bedford Ave ending in the lot at North 7th St on the waterfront. The group spent the afternoon clearing debris from the lot, planting flowers, and eating yummy food, all to the tunes of the Hungry March Band.

This action was in support of the community development plan — an alternative to the Bloomberg administration’s proposals for the Williamsburg-Greenpoint area. The community plan calls for much lower building densities and more public space. This lot is mapped into the Bloomberg plan. However, there’s no capital fund to procure it — to turn it into a park. If they don’t secure the funds after a couple of years, they will develop on it.
