Revs accident

I heard a story about a year ago about a Revs sculpture that was installed on a bridge. The story started out with how this sculpture was welded onto the handrail of the bridge, and when the NYC D.O.T.(Dept of Transportation) did some work on the bridge, not only did they leave the sculpture up, they repainted it in the same color as the handrail, blue! Eventually, with NYC drivers, and as the story goes, a car hops the curb on this particular bridge and takes out the handrail. And to the urban legend that I was told the part of the handrail that held the sculpture went, plunk, into the water below!
Imagine the things you need to go thru to get a Revs sculpture, a blowtorch, portable oxy-acetalyne tanks, a truck, a healthy back and some strength. And according to this story a boat and something to dredge it! (or like most of us just a camera) So believing this story to be true I always rode by the location with little scrutiny, until…

…I was telling a friend the story last night, on a bike ride, and we rode up to the rail. As I looked at the mangled handrail I noticed some bent letters and nearly slapped myself in the face. You may not be so impressed, but the amount of times I have been by this thing is uncountable and I’ve walked up to it numerous times. Then on top of that I lean over the rail to see a roller peice under the UFO throw-up on the wall, by Revs!
It was exciting for a nerd like me to find both of these in a location that I speed by everyday on my bike commute to work!

[…] Well, used to be, anyway. An interesting story about this particular sculpture at Visual Resistance. […]

Now that’s art. Hehe. I’m surprised that the DOT actually left it. Maybe they didn’t want to spend any money taking it out?
