Screening of The Battle of Algiers
Posted November 30th, 2005 by k.see
Visual Resistance and The Empty Vessel Project are screening Gillo Pontecorvo’s, The Battle of Algiers, on Thursday, Dec 1st at 8pm. The movie is starting AT 8:30pm. It’s on a boat and there will be booze, bring your own popcorn.
$2-10 sliding scale donation.
Enter the event on the West side of the Carroll St Bridge, btn Nevins and Bond St, in Brooklyn. Its two blocks east of the Carrroll St F/G trains. Or take the R train to Union St. and walk two blocks South to Carroll, then take a right.
The film deals with the atrocities of war carried out by both sides, the Colonial Imperialists, and Insurgents utilizing terror tactics. There may be some striking parallels between the historical events depicted in the film and the ongoing war in Iraq. For folks who have or havn’t seen this film, come and join us!

So the screening went really well with over 25 folks coming out, and the vessel making some dough for their repairs and renovations!
I was totally inspired and disgusted by this film. It was an amazingly objective, and historical document that I would show to anyone! The parallel’s between occupied Palestine, invaded Iraq, and the tactics used by both sides are exposed for analysis in this film. there doesn’t seem to be any agenda involved in the outcome of the film. It is a document to the strategies of the FLN(guerillas) and the French military, and doesn’t preach pacifism or militarism. The film led to many small discussions on many topics, which reinforces, for me, how valueably intriguing that art and film can be.
I had butterflies in my tummy by the end of the film for many different reasons. Mostly for the determination of people struggling for self-determination, and winning it, and the disgust of the tortue of people and the loss of life.
Revolutions are hard to start, difficult to maintain, and even harder to win!

this film is shown to millitary personel today, all over the world, so that they may know what to expect when searching for terrorists and smokin’ em out of their holes.
sorry i missed the screening. it was a long day which ended with me going to cocktail hour for nyu alumni at the torch club and telling them to support the grad student workers strike.
after that, the boat seemed so far away…
