Stickers

Pick a design for your sticker. You can draw one by hand or create your design using a computer printer. Sticker paper comes in all sizes, so make some that you can carry in your pocket or bag. Find sticker paper with a backing you can easily and quickly peel off. If you don’t feel like spending a lot of money on paper, go to the local post office and take the free priority mail labels or if you can’t hack DIY stickers, just use somebody else’s pre-made, pro-quality vinyl stickers.

If you want to move outside and above ground, remember that if you use an ink jet printer on paper stickers, like USPS stock, the ink might run if you put them someplace that’s totally exposed. Most will hold up fine for months, but if you really fear smears, you can spray acrylic on the stickers before you go out. This might cause the sticker to run too, but it usually makes for a cool effect and extended sticker life.

So spray ‘em, let ‘em dry and then post ‘em. You can always use wheat paste or high strength polyurethane glue (or a even product like liquid nails for vinyl stickers) to make stickers extra sticky, impervious to the elements and nearly impossible to remove.

hey, can i use the likes of hair spray of artists fixative spray on stickers? is it waterproof enough?

  4. eliot Says:

never tried the hairspray or fixative spray so i can’t say if it would waterproof your stickers or not — if you try it out can you let us know how it works?

  5. Ghod Says:

Hairspray and fixative will not mkae the stickers waterproof. Use clear enamel or acrylic spraypaint to make stickers water-resistant.

  6. act Says:

yea the acrylic stuff works, i have tried using all types of different markers too
even prismacolor smears off and runs and makes the sticker look like ass hole

but if you want a really big sticker
peel em off garbage cans and recycling bins
there super sticker but you can take em off kinda easy
    but usps sticks work
    fo sho

another good way to protect your art is hairspray. a good can of aquanet, easily bought or stolen from your local grocer/walmart (depending on whether you buy/steal it, heh).

anyhow, yea, use it just like the spray on accrylic. spray it on your sticker/poster. wala!

I’m not sure where this post has to go really, wheat paste or sticker column, but I’m sure it can be useful for both. First of all, strong hairspray indeed does help prevent staining from rain or wind and significally improves the overall weather resistance. Especially for those who use bubble jet printers for their works as I do. Make sure to spray thick and almost soak your work. It also improves the coloration, intensity and lasting of soft colors. But be careful with soft gray tones as they might spring out a bit. After spraying always dry it! otherwise it won’t stick as good anymore. Dry it completely with a hairdryer or holding under a good, strong lamp will also do. The spray I use is from Got2be brand, -the Ultra strong version.
As for sticking I use a bit more expensive, but I believe best method there is. Spray glue. Scothch released a series of liquid spray glue in cans, all with different properties, one is re-mount, other is colored, but the one you need is again -Ultra strong. It holds perfectly and is very neat and fast to apply (Dries amazingly quick & impossible to tear off). They have different sizes of cans too available. But beware of the price. A 400ml can (lasts pretty okay in time though) reaches up to 20 dollars. Though this method does decrease your time on the hit spot a lot, it’s expensive. I used to work this way with small stuff as stickers and small posters no bigger than 30 x 40cm, but I’m sure it’ll do as great for the big jobs. The lasting time of the glue in these Scotch branded cans are amazing! and if you put a layer on top you’re in for a long long time..

Sorry if its a dumb question but when they say
“You can always use wheat paste or high strength polyurethane glue (or a even product like liquid nails for vinyl stickers) to make stickers extra sticky, impervious to the elements and nearly impossible to remove. ”

Would you apply the wheat paste on where you were going to put the sticker or over it once its apllied?

i have a lot more experience with stencils but recently I’ve taken a stronger notion to do stickers.
I have been using pre-made stickers and mailing labels with just perm-markers and letraset pens etc but the color fades rapidly.
I have read almost all the comments people have made and the advice has been great,
today earlier i went out and purchased: Thick Laminating paper, uhu contact adhesive(in a tube, unfortunately out of 8 shops not one of them had a good quality spray glue), Plain adhesive printer paper, acetate for inkjet printers (but i have a laserjet printer, can anyone forsee any problems here =/), 5 a4 sheets of clear self adhesive vinyl and hopefully ill mix up some wall paper paste soon or my own wheat paste soon. I also have some spray adhesive for applying the stickers to the walls/surfaces etc but i cant be sure of its quality.
Hopefully with this equipment i can experiment and try it out, if anyone has more information on hairspray/adhesive spray over the image on plain sticker paper could you let me know as above the opinion varied, some say it worked, some say it didnt.
    -thanks.

I WANT TO KNOW SOMETHING… WHY HASN’T THE SLAP-TAGGING CROWD REALIZED THAT THE BEST WAY
TO FIGHT THE MAN IS TO SLAP TAG ALL THE POLITICAL CAMPAIGN SIGNS? WHAT BETTER WAY TO SCREW
BACK THE DIRTBAG POLITICIANS WHO ARE MAKING THE RULES IN THE FIRST PLACE? I’D LOVE TO SEE
ROWS OF “LIAR!” STICKERS OVER THE FACES OF POLITICIANS CAMPAIGN SIGNS. ANYONE BRAVE ENOUGH
    TO TAKE THIS CHALLENGE???

ALSO, IF YOU WANT A STICKER THAT LASTS, FIND A LABEL MAKER ON LINE WHO MAKES VINYL STICKERS. THEY ARE
WATERPROOF AND SUN RESISTANT NOT TO FADE. HAPPY STICKING!

  20. toosmart4themachine12 Says:

    ANOTHER TIP:

WANT YOUR STICKER TO BE PERMANENT? FIRST, PLACE YOUR STICKER ON A CUT PIECE OF SHEET METAL (VERY INEXPENSIVE!). THEN, GO BUY
A $3 TUBE OF 5-MINUTE EPOXY WHICH WILL LAST FOR SEVERAL OF THESE TAGGINGS. SPREAD THE EPOXY OVER THE BACK, AND STICK IT ON
STONE, WOOD, GLASS, WHATEVER. PRESTO! PERMANENT GRAFFITI. WHAT A WICKED MIND I HAVE.

NOTE THAT YOU MAY NEED TO DUCT TAPE THE EDGES TO SUPPORT THE SHEET METAL WHILE THE EPOXY DRIES.

I’LL BE BACK WITH EVEN BETTER IDEAS SOON, BUT REMEMBER, GO AFTER THE CAMPAIGN SIGNS OF YOUR LOCAL POLITICIANS, AND BE CREATIVE!
DO SOME RESEARCH AND TRY TO GET SOME DIRT ON THEM, THEN SPILL THE SECRET ON THEIR SIGNS WITH YOUR ART!

ok, ive been experimenting to find a sticker with a good finish, water proof, simply weather proof and proffessional looking home-made sticker and here is the final, best solution for stickers out of everythin i tried,
    you need:
normal self adhesive printer paper (peel+stick)
sticky back plastic and/or hair spray
wall paper paste/wheat paste or any contact instant stick adhesive(a bit fiddly cos it comes in a tube)

-freehand ur design on the paper its just like plain cartridge on one side or u can load it into the printer and print off ur design if its on ur computer (i photocopied my sketches onto the adhesive paper and had a4 sized pieces =p)
-once you got ur design on the adhesive paper you can coat it with hairspray, if its printed off computer, other wise it will run.
-then coat the sheet with sticky back plastic(no air bubbles)
    !and its ready for stickin!
-for stickin it to smooth surfaces u can use the stick already on the paper although its a bit weak, wall paper paste/wheat paste is great cos its storng water proof and works on all surfaces. contact adhesive works on all surfaces too and is stronger than wheat paste but its annoying cos its in a tube and it takes a long time to dry =/
